A woman suffered life-altering injuries after falling 20ft from a rollercoaster moving at 60mph, as revealed in recently uncovered CCTV footage. The incident occurred on the Jetline ride at the Gröna Lund theme park in Stockholm in June 2023, resulting in one fatality and nine injuries. Prosecutors are seeking an 18 million Swedish Krona fine against the attraction’s owners for alleged safety violations.
The video footage depicts Karin Elmegard’s harrowing fall, leading to her requiring immediate surgery and ongoing physical and mental challenges. Karin recounted noticing an object falling from a preceding cart moments before her own fall, causing panic among riders. While she was ejected from the ride, her husband Mikael was stranded in the carriage, fearing for her safety.
Reflecting on the incident, Karin expressed the difficulty of watching the footage and seeing her husband distressed by the fall. She described the terrifying experience of falling towards the ground at high speed, grateful to have landed on grass rather than a harder surface.
Mikael hopes the trial will hold the theme park accountable for the accident, emphasizing the shock of witnessing his wife’s fall and uncertain condition afterward. Following the incident, the Jetline ride at Gröna Lund has remained closed. Originally opened in 1988 and renovated in 1997 for a more intense ride experience, the rollercoaster reached speeds of nearly 60mph and subjected riders to a maximum g-force of 4.5.
Despite the allegations, Gröna Lund and the ride’s safety overseers deny any wrongdoing in the tragic event.
