A young woman’s body was recovered from the River Tees in Barnard Castle, County Durham after concerns were raised about a kayaker in distress. Emergency services, including firefighters, paramedics, police, coastguard, and a search and mountain rescue team, responded to the scene.
Durham Constabulary received reports of a kayaker in trouble in the river around 2pm on Saturday. Approximately two hours later, the body of the 20-year-old woman was found. Specialized officers are now supporting the family of the deceased.
A police spokesperson expressed regret, stating, “We are saddened to confirm the recovery of a body from the River Tees in Barnard Castle this afternoon.” The statement continued, detailing the collaborative efforts of multiple emergency services in the search and recovery operation.
The North East Ambulance Service dispatched crews and requested assistance from the Great North Air Ambulance Service and the mountain rescue team following reports of a person in the water in the Lartington area of Barnard Castle.
