A tragic incident involving a family of four, including two young children, has shocked authorities in Istanbul. The Bocek family, consisting of parents Cigdem, 27, and Servet, 38, along with their children Masal, three, and Kadir Muhammet, six, were found dead in their hotel room after falling gravely ill. Initially suspected to be food poisoning from sampling local street food, investigations have led to the arrest of 11 individuals, including hotel staff. The suspicion now centers on the use of aluminium phosphide, a potent pesticide used for bedbug extermination in the hotel, which may have inadvertently poisoned the family through the ventilation system.

Aluminium phosphide is a highly toxic substance known to cause fatal consequences if inhaled in significant quantities. Furthermore, it was discovered that one employee of the pest control company lacked proper certification. Following the incident, the hotel was evacuated and sealed off for further examination, with authorities collecting samples from various items within the premises. Additionally, two other guests, identified as an Italian and a Moroccan tourist, were hospitalized for suspected poisoning, prompting police to investigate further.

The Bocek family, hailing from Hamburg, Germany, had arrived in Istanbul’s Fatih district on November 9 for a holiday. Shortly after experiencing symptoms of nausea, vomiting, and dizziness, they sought medical help, resulting in the tragic deaths of Cigdem and the children. Servet passed away after several days in intensive care. The family was laid to rest in Afyonkarahisar, Turkey. The Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office initiated the investigation, detaining multiple individuals, including street food vendors, to analyze samples from the food consumed by the family.

Mustafa Celik, the children’s grandfather, expressed his intention to seek justice for his daughter and her family, emphasizing the need for severe penalties for those responsible. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has assured that thorough investigations will be carried out to determine the cause of this heartbreaking loss.
