The Tory party shop at this year’s Conservative Party conference in Manchester was brimming with Conservative-themed items, but noticeably absent was any mention of Kemi Badenoch. While images of past Tory Prime Ministers Margaret Thatcher and Winston Churchill were prominently displayed, the current Tory leader was conspicuously missing. The focus this year seemed to revolve around Margaret Thatcher, with cardboard cutouts, famous quotes, and even a Thatcher museum showcasing her iconic outfits in celebration of what would have been her 100th birthday. The absence of Badenoch in the merchandise lineup could be attributed to the uncertainty surrounding her future as the Tory leader. The merchandise selection largely consisted of recycled items from previous years, including Thatcher-themed mugs, baubles, busts, and even a bottle of single malt whisky featuring Thatcher’s image. Various Tory logo accessories, clothing items, and souvenirs were also available for purchase, with prices ranging from £13.50 to £95. Despite the party’s claims to support British businesses, some of the items, such as Tory hoodies made in Nicaragua and t-shirts made in Morocco, raised questions about the party’s commitment to local products. The t-shirts with slogans seemingly aimed at mocking Labour’s record could also be interpreted as a reflection of the Tories’ long-standing tenure in office.
