Simone Abrahamsohn, a resident of Toronto, faced a significant life change this summer with the loss of her mother and the new responsibility of caring for her older brother. Juggling the role of her brother’s primary caregiver while creating a harmonious living arrangement for two neurodivergent middle-aged siblings presents unique challenges.
Despite these challenges, Simone cherishes the time spent with her brother, Stuart, who brings joy with his infectious laughter, love for pistachio milkshakes, and fascination with violinist podcasts. Stuart, who is autistic and a left-brain stem stroke survivor, requires assistance with daily activities like feeding, transfers, bathing, and managing his emotional lability triggered by loud noises.
Reflecting on their childhood, Simone recalls feeling embarrassed by Stuart’s introverted behavior and stimming. Over the years, she has learned to manage her own ADHD tendencies through masking and emotional regulation techniques to ensure a peaceful coexistence with her brother.
As an adult, Simone has embraced her role as Stuart’s roommate, striving to understand and support him better. She values open communication, respects Stuart’s preferences, and actively involves him in decision-making processes. Despite sacrifices like giving up extracurricular activities due to caregiving responsibilities, Simone finds fulfillment in nurturing their sibling relationship and creating a supportive living environment.
Through compassion and dedication, Simone is committed to providing a nurturing and inclusive space for her neurodivergent brother, seizing the opportunity to strengthen their bond and make up for past shortcomings.
