“Too Many Devices Slowing Down Your Internet? Here’s the Fix”

Published on

If your internet speed isn’t up to par, there may be a simple explanation. Uswitch reports that many homeowners are unaware of the number of devices connected to their router, with the average British household having around 16 web-enabled gadgets. Some of these devices, like video doorbells, constantly use bandwidth, which can slow down activities such as video calls and streaming services like Netflix, especially in homes with basic internet connections.

Broadband can be likened to a road – the more traffic, the slower it gets. While full-fiber connections can handle heavy usage, older copper cables may struggle. Another issue arises from “phantom” devices that remain connected to the network even when not in use, causing unnecessary data exchange with the router.

To improve connectivity, consider upgrading to faster full-fiber speeds if your home has numerous smart devices. Additionally, disconnect any unused devices to free up bandwidth and enhance speed. Max Beckett, a broadband expert at Uswitch, emphasizes the importance of identifying and removing devices that are needlessly consuming bandwidth, even when not actively in use.

Performing a digital spring clean by disconnecting or powering down unused devices can significantly improve your connection quality. While full-fiber broadband is the best solution for buffering issues, managing connected devices and limiting simultaneous high-definition video streaming can also make a substantial difference.
