“The Nature of Things 101 Explores Enigmatic Ocean Sunfish”

Published on

The ocean sunfish, despite its unconventional appearance, can weigh up to two tonnes and is often covered in parasites, including on its eyeballs. In a recent episode of The Nature of Things 101, Sarika Cullis-Suzuki delves into the fascinating world of this unique fish, known as the Mola mola.

Describing the fish as a stark departure from traditional fish shapes, Cullis-Suzuki highlights its massive circular body, lack of a tail, and oversized fins. Through a life-size model, she showcases the distinctive features that make the Mola mola, a prominent ocean sunfish species, an intriguing subject.

These remarkable creatures undertake extensive journeys, traversing deep waters multiple times a day in search of sustenance. However, their leisurely pace, large surface area, and movement across various water zones make them susceptible to parasites, as Cullis-Suzuki explains.

The ocean sunfish harbors a myriad of parasites, with researchers identifying 73 different species on the Mola mola and other sunfish varieties, some even hosting parasites themselves. To combat these unwelcome guests, sunfish employ unique tactics such as breaching out of the water and crashing back down, possibly to dislodge parasites. They also permit smaller fish and birds to feed on the parasites.

Despite our existing knowledge, the ocean sunfish remains a subject ripe for further exploration and study. Cullis-Suzuki emphasizes the need for continued research to unveil more mysteries surrounding this enigmatic species.

For those intrigued by these peculiar creatures, The Nature of Things 101 can be viewed on CBC Gem and The Nature of Things YouTube channel.
