“The Deadly Legacy of Thomas Midgley Jr.”

Published on

Thomas Midgley Jr, once celebrated as a pioneering inventor in America, has now earned a notorious reputation as one of history’s most disastrous innovators. Regrettably, his creations inadvertently led to more deaths, including his own, than any other individual in history.

Midgley, born in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, to a family with a history of innovation, demonstrated his inventive spirit from a young age. His childhood interests and experiments foreshadowed his later contributions to science and technology.

After graduating from Cornell University in 1911, Midgley embarked on a career in the automotive industry during the dawn of the automobile era in the United States. Tasked with addressing engine knocking issues caused by low-quality gasoline, he delved into researching chemical solutions, eventually settling on tetraethyl lead, marketed as Ethyl.

Despite widespread knowledge of lead’s toxicity, Midgley and General Motors promoted the use of leaded gasoline, dismissing concerns about its health risks. Tragic incidents, such as the deaths of GM employees due to lead exposure, highlighted the dangers of Midgley’s invention.

Although leaded gasoline was phased out in 1996, its adverse effects persisted for decades, impacting millions of individuals. The ban on leaded gasoline in Algeria in 2021 marked the final step in discontinuing Midgley’s harmful creation.

Ironically, Midgley’s most dangerous invention came later with the development of Freon, a widely used compound in air conditioning systems and aerosols. Initially praised for its safety, the detrimental environmental impact of Freon led to its global ban under the Montreal Protocol.

Despite his initial accolades and recognition in the chemical engineering industry, Midgley’s legacy is marred by the catastrophic consequences of his inventions. His tragic demise in 1944, attributed to suicide induced by lead poisoning-induced psychosis, serves as a poignant reminder of the perils of unchecked scientific advancements.
