A 19-year-old man, identified as Kade Hughes by friends, tragically lost his life after being struck by a vehicle on the M66 following a suspected police pursuit. The incident occurred near Simister Island on Sunday night, prompting an outpouring of heartfelt tributes on social media where friends remembered Kade’s gentle nature and expressed sorrow over his untimely passing.
Video footage surfaced showing a group, believed to be Kade’s companions, setting off fireworks and flares at the crash site on Monday evening. The group ignited the fireworks near the busy motorway during peak traffic hours, causing several vehicles to halt as the explosives detonated close to the road.
According to police reports, Kade was hit by a southbound vehicle on the M66 near the M60 junction for Simister Island around 9:40 pm on Sunday. Authorities suspect that Kade may have been in a car involved in a chase with Greater Manchester Police (GMP) officers. The pursuit began after a blue BMW X3 was spotted speeding on Bury Old Road and running a red light, leading to a police chase.
The chased vehicle was later found abandoned on the Junction 18 roundabout of the M60 after colliding with another vehicle. The occupants of the BMW fled on foot along the carriageway, resulting in the fatal collision with a Tesla that claimed Kade’s life. No arrests have been made in connection with the incident.
Both GMP’s Professional Standards Directorate and the Independent Office for Police Conduct have been informed about the incident. The motorway was closed while authorities conducted investigations and remained shut into the following day for forensic examination.
DC Ian Lawton from GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit stated, “Officers followed pursuit protocols after a vehicle failed to stop, leading to the tragic collision and fatal injuries. The incident is now under independent review with the IOPC. We offer our condolences to the family and urge anyone with relevant information or footage to come forward.”
