A woman sustained severe burns when an unidentified person poured a corrosive substance on her while she was strolling through a public park. Ashley Wasielewski, 46, was walking in Forsyth Park in Savannah around 8:16 pm on Wednesday when the incident occurred. The park is a popular spot for various activities and is frequented by visitors and locals alike.

Local authorities in Savannah confirmed that Ashley was targeted by a stranger in the attack. The perpetrator is currently at large, and investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend the individual responsible.

Ashley is undergoing treatment for second- and third-degree burns at a burn center in Augusta, according to her son, Westley Wasielewski. Her injuries are extensive, covering approximately half of her body including her scalp, face, hands, and legs.

The victim’s son recounted that Ashley was walking in the park after attending a Christmas event at a nearby church when the attack happened. A bystander who witnessed the incident informed Westley about the assault over the phone, where he could hear his mother’s distress.

Describing the attack, a close friend of Ashley mentioned that she noticed a shadow approaching her from behind before the assailant poured the liquid on her head, causing immediate pain and burns. The corrosive substance was so potent that it even melted the key fob in her pocket.

Law enforcement, including the FBI, is collaborating to determine the nature of the chemical used in the assault. Police presence in parks across Savannah has been increased as a precautionary measure following the incident, but no arrests have been made yet.

Authorities are seeking a person of interest captured in a security camera image wearing a dark hoodie with a large cartoon rabbit design. The individual is not currently considered a suspect in any crime. Savannah’s Mayor emphasized the seriousness of the case and assured the public that there is no indication of a broader threat.

Despite not being named publicly, Ashley’s son and friend expressed her desire to share her story in the hope of aiding the investigation. Described as a generous person, Ashley’s loved ones are shocked by the senseless attack on someone known for her charitable deeds and kindness.
