Several prominent figures in the world of snooker, such as Ronnie O’Sullivan, Shaun Murphy, Kyren Wilson, and Mark Selby, have shared their perspectives on a rule they feel should be altered within the sport. During an interview with TNT Sports, top snooker professionals were asked about a single modification they would like to see in the rules of snooker, and a common theme emerged.
Renowned seven-time world champion O’Sullivan, among others, has advocated for a review of the contentious ‘miss’ rule, which has been a point of contention for elite players. The current rule penalizes players when they fail to make contact with the designated ball during their shot, resulting in a foul and a miss call by the referee.
A miss is typically called when the referee believes a player deliberately chose a more difficult shot over an easier option to escape a snooker. It can also be enforced if a player underplays a shot, indicating a lack of effort.
Upon declaration of a ‘foul and a miss,’ the opponent of the offending player can choose to reset the balls for a retake or leave them as they lie on the table. Persistent fouls may lead to a situation where the player repeatedly attempts the same shot while their opponent gains points without making a move.
In contrast, the ‘three-miss rule’ dictates that a player who fails to hit the correct ball thrice in a row automatically concedes the frame to their opponent. This rule has sparked debate within the sport due to concerns about inconsistent application, game pace interruptions, and potential confusion for casual viewers.
When asked about potential changes to the game, O’Sullivan promptly pinpointed the miss rule, with Wilson echoing his sentiment by suggesting a limitation of three misses. Selby also weighed in, proposing a restriction where a player is allowed only three misses before consequences are enforced to prevent undeserved wins due to repeated fouls.
Former world champion Murphy took a different stance, criticizing the potential manipulation of the miss rule. He highlighted the issue of players exploiting the foul and miss rule to their advantage, expressing his disapproval of such tactics.
Neil Robertson, the current world number three, proposed a significant reform by suggesting that if a player fails to make contact with a visible red ball, their opponent should be awarded a free ball. This adjustment, he believes, would enhance the pace of the game significantly.
Meanwhile, apart from addressing the miss rule, snooker’s elite players also scrutinized the traditional dress code of the sport. The longstanding requirement for players to wear long-sleeved shirts, waistcoats, and formal footwear has faced criticism, with many advocating for a more relaxed approach to attire regulations.
When questioned about potential changes, Mark Allen emphasized the need to relax the dress code, highlighting the importance of a more flexible approach. Luca Brecel added to the conversation by suggesting improvements to the dress code, shot clock regulations, and ensuring that players always make contact with a cushion during play.
