Snooker icon Ronnie O’Sullivan has revealed his strategic approach in selecting opportunities, recognizing the finite nature of his elite career. This shift involves a reduction in exhibition matches for The Rocket as he channels his energy towards competitive tournaments.
Turning 50 in December, O’Sullivan boasts a remarkable seven world championship titles, with his most recent triumph at The Crucible in 2022. While he opted out of several events during the 2025/26 season, he did reach the final of the Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters in August, narrowly falling to Neil Robertson.
Despite the lucrative nature of exhibition games for top players, O’Sullivan has prioritized competitive play over such engagements due to the demanding nature of juggling both. He emphasized this decision, stating that focusing solely on tournaments alleviates added pressure and allows him to give his best effort.
Acknowledging that he is likely in the twilight of his career, O’Sullivan expressed gratitude for his sponsors’ support, which enables him to concentrate on his game without the need for additional commitments like exhibitions. His recent relocation to Dubai has facilitated easier access to tournaments in Asia, such as the upcoming Xi’an Grand Prix, where he reached the semi-finals last year.
Reflecting on his future plans after a challenging match in May, O’Sullivan shared his contemplation of moving away from the UK for a fresh start, underscoring the importance of considering life beyond snooker. While uncertainties remain, he remains open to changes and new experiences in the Middle East, emphasizing the need to adapt to evolving circumstances.
