In a popular vacation destination frequented by British tourists, vulnerable children in care facilities are being targeted by criminal sex traffickers. Spanish authorities are actively working to dismantle an international network engaged in pedophile activities in the Canary Islands. This criminal group is accused of preying on migrant children, particularly those arriving unaccompanied on boats from Africa.
The Canary Islands, situated off the coast of Africa, have witnessed an influx of nearly 30,000 individuals from Africa arriving on makeshift rafts or canoes. Among these arrivals are children seeking to escape situations like forced marriage and genital mutilation, as highlighted by the UN Refugee council.
A distressing report of 14 missing children, predominantly girls, from a care home in Arrecife, Lanzarote, prompted law enforcement to initiate a large-scale investigation codenamed ‘Operation Triton’ to locate them. Investigations revealed that some of these children were trafficked from Lanzarote to France for the purpose of sexual exploitation by a trafficking ring operating across multiple countries.
Authorities suspect that the trafficking network, with ties to Morocco and contacts in the Ivory Coast, facilitated the movement of these children through various safe houses in Spain and eventually into France. Spanish police, donning balaclavas, conducted raids this month resulting in the arrest of eleven alleged traffickers linked to the disappearances of girls between November 2024 and May of this year.
The suspects are facing charges including human trafficking, child pornography offenses, and document forgery, with four of them in pre-detention. The Minister of Social Welfare, Marciano Acuna, emphasized the collaborative efforts between authorities and stated that the children in care homes are not under constant supervision.
The care homes in the Canary Islands, overwhelmed by the rising number of young migrants, many of whom do not speak Spanish, are reportedly struggling to cope. In response, the Spanish Government authorized the transfer of 468 minors to reception centers on the mainland, with a total of over 900 minors relocated to date.

Allegations suggest that payments for children are funneled through crypto wallets to evade detection, and private vehicles are utilized to smuggle children across borders discreetly. Another investigation on Gran Canaria is focused on minors taken from care homes for purposes of prostitution.
