Sir Sadiq Khan has expressed his support for Zohran Mamdani, a Democrat who has been elected as the new mayor of New York City, marking a significant setback for Donald Trump.
Despite President Trump backing Andrew Cuomo, Mamdani emerged victorious, defeating both Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa. Mamdani’s win makes him the first Muslim mayor and the first of South Asian descent to lead the city.
Sir Sadiq praised Mamdani’s historic campaign and congratulated him on his upcoming role as New York’s youngest mayor in over a century, starting January 1. He highlighted the choice New Yorkers faced between hope and fear, noting that hope prevailed, much like in London.
The London mayor’s endorsement of Mamdani follows a long-standing feud between him and Trump. Trump has criticized Sadiq since 2015, particularly after Sadiq denounced Trump’s anti-Muslim remarks. During Trump’s UK visit, he called Sadiq one of the worst mayors globally and attempted to exclude him from events.
In response, Sadiq labeled Trump as racist, sexist, and Islamophobic. He questioned Trump’s fixation on him and accused the president of promoting discriminatory views.
Mamdani, in his victory speech, called out Trump and emphasized New York’s identity as a city of immigrants, now led by an immigrant. He urged Trump to pay attention to the overwhelming support from his followers.
The city’s Board of Elections reported a record voter turnout, with over two million ballots cast. Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson, when asked about Mamdani’s win, mentioned her limited focus on American politics.
Overall, Mamdani’s win signifies a shift in New York’s leadership, reflecting a diverse and inclusive vision for the city’s future.
