Stephen Hendry believes that Ronnie O’Sullivan has been inspired by Mark Williams’ approach as he has shown a positive turnaround in form this season. O’Sullivan had a challenging 2024/25 season, withdrawing from several tournaments abruptly after damaging his cue in frustration in January.
Following his plan to play a reduced schedule this year, the 49-year-old has displayed a rejuvenated and focused performance whenever he has competed. Notably, he achieved two maximum breaks in a single match on his way to the final of the Saudi Arabia Masters, where he narrowly lost to Neil Roberton in the deciding frame. O’Sullivan also demonstrated strong form at the Xi’an Grand Prix before exiting in the quarter-finals against Gary Wilson.
Meanwhile, Williams, a member of the ‘Class of 92′ alongside O’Sullivan, claimed victory at that event by defeating Shaun Murphy in the final. At 50 years and 206 days old, Williams became the oldest winner of a ranking tournament, surpassing the previous record set by Ray Reardon in 1982.
Williams’ laid-back demeanor has been key to his sustained success as he remains a formidable competitor while not dwelling on setbacks. Hendry commended Williams for maintaining a high level of play despite minimal practice outside of competitions, stating that his carefree attitude towards wins and losses makes him a formidable opponent in any sport.
Hendry, speaking on the WST’s Snooker Club podcast, mentioned, “I think Ronnie’s trying to emulate Mark’s attitude. Ronnie has recognized that as the way forward.” The snooker legend further emphasized his admiration for Williams’ lifestyle and approach, highlighting the effectiveness of staying composed regardless of the outcome.
