A new snake species has been discovered in the jungle, with a name that will ring a bell for rock enthusiasts. Researchers at the Field Museum in Chicago have christened a newly identified groundsnake from New Guinea as Lielaphis slashi, paying homage to the renowned Guns N’ Roses guitarist, Slash.

The approximately 71-centimeter reddish-brown reptile has been formally designated as Slash’s groundsnake. This recognition holds special significance for Slash, who is described by the Field Museum as a lifelong reptile enthusiast and a staunch supporter of zoos and museums.

Slash, who founded the rock supergroup Slash’s Snakepit in 1994, expressed his gratitude for having a snake named after him, stating that he never anticipated such an honor. Sara Ruane, the Field Museum’s associate curator of herpetology and lead author of the research paper in Zootaxa detailing the new species, shared that her fascination with reptiles began at a young age.

The snake was first encountered in 2006 during fieldwork in New Guinea by Chris Austin, a professor and curator of herpetology at Louisiana State University’s Museum of Natural Science. The island, known for its rich biodiversity, including the newly discovered groundsnake, presents challenges for researchers due to its dense forests and the presence of venomous species.

Genetic analysis revealed that Lielaphis slashi is distinct from other snakes in its genus.
