“Reviving Family Tradition: From Pakistani Feasts to Canadian Gatherings”

Published on

Growing up in Delta, B.C., one of my treasured childhood memories revolves around our family dinners, where we gathered on a small beige mat. The setting sun would cast a warm glow as we indulged in delicious Pakistani dishes like biryani and butter chicken with naan. This tradition, passed down from my father’s upbringing in Lahore to our home in the suburbs, was not just about sharing a meal but also about cherishing the togetherness it brought.

As time passed, our family dinners became less frequent due to busy schedules. However, during a Thanksgiving dinner at the age of 23, I decided to revive this tradition. Inviting my friends from diverse cultural backgrounds to join us, we recreated the circle on the floor with plates of turkey in front of us. The experience was heartwarming, with my father joining us and explaining the significance of this tradition to our curious friends.

This moment became a bridge between our heritage traditions and Canadian customs. Inspired by the Thanksgiving gathering, my family decided to resurrect the tradition of dining on the mat. Once again, we found that sharing stories and meals on the ground strengthened our familial bonds, reminding us of the importance of togetherness amidst our hectic lives.

Now, as the sun sets, we often find ourselves back on the beige mat, prioritizing dinner time as a sacred moment to be fully present with each other. Whether on the mat or around the dining table, the essence of togetherness prevails, not just during special occasions but throughout the year, carrying on a tradition that transcends generations.
