“Record-breaking Atlantic bluefin tuna catches attention in UK waters”

A commonly held belief is that tuna fish are small enough to fit in the typical cans found in grocery stores. However, some tuna species can grow to immense sizes.

The types of tuna commonly consumed in the UK are albacore, bigeye, bluefin, skipjack, and yellowfin. Among these, skipjack is the smallest and usually weighs under 10kg.

In contrast, the western Atlantic bluefin tuna, the larger relative of the skipjack, is a colossal creature. Recently, a photo of the largest recorded Atlantic bluefin tuna has resurfaced, showcasing its massive size compared to the man who caught it.

Back in October 1979, Ken Fraser reeled in a colossal Atlantic bluefin tuna weighing a staggering 1,496 pounds (about 679 kilograms) near Aulds Cove, Nova Scotia, Canada. This remarkable catch, made with the help of Capt. Eric Samson aboard Lady and Misty, remains a record to this day.

During the intense 45-minute battle to haul in the giant fish, Ken eventually managed to secure the record-breaking catch after the tuna took the baited mackerel.

Ken recounted in his book, “Possessed,” the unexpected turn of events where he had to take over from a fatigued crew member to secure the world record catch.

The enormous 12ft tuna was weighed after drying out for approximately 10 hours on the boat, indicating that its live weight was likely even greater.

Ken’s record-setting catch has stood for over 45 years. Recently, a significant Atlantic bluefin tuna weighing 210kg (463lb) was bought by Devon fish wholesaler Ian Perkes at Brixham fish market for over £2,000. This catch highlights the increasing presence of large bluefin tuna in British waters.

Ian mentioned that the bluefin tuna sightings in British waters have become more frequent, with a notable increase in recent years. These sightings are a departure from the previous trend, with the last significant appearance of such large fish dating back to the 1950s.

While the identity of the fisherman who landed the giant bluefin tuna remains undisclosed, Ian noted that the catch was made using rod and line from a relatively small boat, indicating the skill and capability of local fishermen in the area.
