Motorists encountered significant traffic disruptions as a section of a major highway was shut down following a severe accident involving a pedestrian. The incident, described by National Highways as a ‘serious collision between a car and pedestrian,’ occurred on the M6 in Chesire just before 9 am today.
Both police and paramedics responded to the scene, with an air ambulance landing in a nearby field. While the northbound lanes within J19 have now reopened, one lane remains closed for cleanup, causing delays of about 45 minutes and three miles of congestion leading up to J19 on the northbound M6.
Although the southbound lanes are open, the northbound carriageway remains closed at J19 with diversions in place via exit and entry slip roads. Long delays are reported in both directions, with National Highways advising drivers to expect delays exceeding 45 minutes northbound and 60 minutes southbound.
Cheshire Police and emergency services are on-site, and investigation work is anticipated to prolong the closure for several hours. Traffic is being redirected around the incident near J19, and National Highways urges motorists to plan for additional travel time or consider alternative routes.
The closure, affecting both northbound and southbound traffic on the M6, is likely to persist for an extended period due to the ongoing investigation and cleanup efforts. Motorists are encouraged to stay updated through National Highways’ website, traffic apps, or their 24/7 contact center for real-time information.
