Nigel Farage is under scrutiny by Parliament for a delayed disclosure of interests. The Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards initiated an inquiry on October 30 regarding Farage’s earnings and overseas trips. The investigation is centered on his alleged omission of a visit to Florida to participate in a fundraising event for Donald Trump earlier this year.
Farage, who recently announced intentions to cut benefits, was the keynote speaker at a Republican party dinner in Tallahassee, where attendees could pay up to £18,445 for a VIP experience, including a photo opportunity with the Clacton MP.
Addressing the issue, Farage attributed the oversight in not registering the trip to a mistake by his office, stating that the details were emailed but not included in the transparency logs. He assured that a correction would be made promptly along with an apology.
According to parliamentary regulations, MPs must declare trips abroad exceeding £300, not fully funded by themselves or public resources, within 28 days. In response, a Labour source criticized Farage for his absences from parliament and recent policy positions, while the Lib Dem Deputy Leader called for transparency regarding Farage’s ties with the Trump administration.
Farage, previously investigated for ownership of an undisclosed fishing boat, was cleared as the vessel belonged to a company associated with him. Reports revealed Farage as the top-earning MP, with significant income from various roles and investments, including a thriving property portfolio and media commentator position.
Despite requests for comment, Reform UK, Farage’s party, did not respond.
