Panic gripped JFK Airport as an off-duty customs officer allegedly fired shots at a driver, causing chaos among frightened tourists. Port Authority officers are currently investigating the incident, which occurred in the early hours of Tuesday. Gunfire broke out near terminal 8 of the airport at approximately 4:48 am, resulting in damage to a vehicle but no injuries reported. An attending police officer discharged their weapon at the scene.
The off-duty customs officer was reportedly questioned in connection with the shooting. Images from the area depicted a significant presence of emergency services vehicles near JFK Airport on Tuesday morning. Traffic cones were deployed, and multiple police officers were stationed at a highway intersection.
The incident led to congestion on the southbound lane, prompting its closure with traffic redirected to local roads. Subsequently, one lane was reopened around 7 am. Passengers were advised to utilize the Air Train to JFK and verify their flight status before traveling. The Mirror has reached out to the New York City Police Department for a statement.
