A teenager working at a nursery has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for raping and sexually abusing children as young as three. Thomas Waller, now 18, from Surrey, was convicted on October 31 of multiple offenses, including rape, inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, and taking indecent images of children that occurred in 2024.

The court heard that within days of caring for the children, Waller manipulated his position to gain the trust of two boys and exploit them. One of the boys’ fathers expressed in a victim impact statement the profound impact the abuse had on his son.

During sentencing, Judge Claire Harden-Frost remarked on the heartbreaking situation where the parents felt a sense of responsibility for what occurred. Waller was described by the mother of one victim as a dangerous individual who committed calculated acts at a young age.

The mother of a toddler who was abused at the nursery described the shocking revelation made by her child. Following her child’s disclosure, the matter was promptly reported to the authorities, leading to Waller’s arrest the same day.

The nursery, located in Surrey, expressed deep shock and sadness over the actions of the former staff member. They highlighted their immediate actions upon learning of the incident, including contacting the police, suspending the individual, and enhancing their safeguarding policies and staff training.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) barrister emphasized the seriousness of the offenses and the need for a severe sentence. Jonathan Hulley, Surrey County Council’s children and families cabinet member, condemned Waller’s actions and emphasized the priority of child safeguarding.
