The driveway of a luxurious beachfront estate in Malibu, reportedly owned by Nicolas Cage, experienced a collapse on Tuesday morning due to a massive sinkhole that opened up in front of the property. The incident led to a gas leak around 6 a.m., prompting a swift response from authorities and utility services. SoCalGas confirmed that the gas leak was contained a few hours later but decided to temporarily halt natural gas services in a portion of the street as a precaution against coastal erosion.

The sinkhole, measuring approximately 7.5 to nine meters in depth and 18 meters in width, extends into the roadway, as stated by local authorities. By Wednesday, an emergency declaration was made, and an evacuation order was issued for 31 properties in the vicinity.

Although requests for comments from Nicolas Cage’s representatives went unanswered, property records indicated that the estate was sold in 2024, with the previous owner mentioning Cage as the buyer at the time of the transaction.

The mansion suffered damage during a coastal flooding advisory in the Los Angeles area caused by the remnants of Hurricane Marie, which regressed into a tropical storm. While the storm did not directly hit land, it brought heavy rainfall and created hazardous waves along the Southern California coast over the holiday weekend.

In response to the incident, the City of Malibu released a statement on Wednesday, attributing the sinkhole occurrence to broader regional coastal conditions. The city is actively monitoring coastal erosion in various vulnerable areas along the coast, including the Pacific Coast Highway in the Palisades Fire burn area and Point Dume State Beach.

Situated between the ocean and the renowned Pacific Coast Highway, the private community where the mansion is located faced this unexpected event. Nicolas Cage, aged 62, recently featured in the Amazon series “Spider-Noir” and is set to portray John Madden in an upcoming biopic about the NFL figure later this year. With an extensive career in film, Cage has starred in over 100 movies, earning an Academy Award for his role in “Leaving Las Vegas.”
