However, the convenience of seamless travel within Europe for UK residents changed on December 31, 2020, following the UK’s exit from the EU.
Beginning October 12, 2025, travelers will need to provide additional identification details when moving between countries in the Schengen area, comprising EU nations and Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway.
Despite the relatively minor adjustments, the lack of awareness regarding the new regulations could lead to delays at border crossings, impacting holiday plans.

While citizens from the EU, EEA, and Switzerland have been familiar with similar procedures since April 2, 2025, UK residents will now need to comply with the EES requirements for travel to the EU.
Anticipated delays at ports and border controls may vary, with additional processing estimated to add approximately 10 minutes per person traveling by car.
Travelers must ensure they are well-versed in the new guidelines to avoid disruptions and adhere to the EES regulations, which are non-negotiable.
Furthermore, the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) will soon require citizens of visa-exempt countries, including the UK, to obtain travel authorization before entering specified European countries.
ETIAS applications will involve a fee and must be submitted well in advance to allow for potential extended approval periods.
