MPs are pressing for clarifications regarding Prince Andrew’s rent-free arrangement at Royal Lodge in light of the “serious and disturbing allegations” against him. The influential Parliamentary watchdog, known as the ‘queen of select committees,’ has called on the Treasury and Crown Estate to provide explanations regarding Andrew’s advantageous lease. Concerns have arisen about potential financial implications for the public, as revenues from the Crown Estate typically contribute to government funds.
The Public Accounts Committee (PAC), responsible for overseeing taxpayer spending, has formally requested an update on the lease status for the opulent Royal Lodge property. PAC chairman Sir Geoffrey Clifton Brown emphasized the public interest in ensuring sound financial management, especially given the serious allegations against Prince Andrew and his diminished royal role.
The committee is particularly interested in evaluating whether the terms of Andrew’s lease align with current circumstances and offer optimal value for money. They are also keen to ensure that maintenance obligations are being met to preserve the historic significance of the royal residence.
As part of their mandate to ensure fiscal efficiency, the PAC has set a deadline of November 28 for responses from the Crown Estate and Treasury. Prince Andrew secured a 75-year lease for Royal Lodge in 2003 for £1million, with an annual “peppercorn” rent clause that has seldom been enforced.
