In newly released data, the most economically disadvantaged area in England is located within the constituency of Nigel Farage in Clacton. Specifically, a neighborhood in Jaywick, Clacton-on-Sea, has been identified as having the highest level of deprivation among over 33,750 small local areas nationwide, according to official statistics.
The Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government assessed deprivation scores for each area by analyzing factors such as income, employment, education, health, crime, housing, and the overall local environment.
This announcement coincides with Reform UK’s recent proposal to eliminate personal independence payments (PIP) for individuals with non-serious anxiety disorders. The party, led by Mr. Farage, aims to introduce more frequent reassessments for eligible claimants as part of a broader plan to overhaul the benefits system and potentially save £9 billion annually by 2029.
The Indices of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) serve as a key tool for pinpointing disadvantaged and poverty-stricken regions in the UK. This update, the first since 2019, reflects the impact of the Covid pandemic on local communities.
Deprivation rates are calculated separately for Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, with the latest data focusing solely on England. Scores are computed for very small neighborhoods known as LSOAs, each typically comprising around 1,500 residents.
The area in Clacton with the lowest deprivation score is situated to the west of the town, known officially as Tendring 018A, where most residents reside in detached bungalows within the Brooklands Estate.
Nigel Farage, elected as MP for Clacton in the recent General Election, has emerged as the highest-earning MP, having earned close to £1 million from secondary jobs since taking office. The next five most deprived areas in the country are all located in Blackpool.
Given the prevalence of disadvantaged neighborhoods in Blackpool, it comes as no surprise that the city ranks as the most deprived local authority in England, with neighborhoods there exhibiting the highest average IMD scores nationwide. Other highly deprived areas include Middlesbrough, Burnley, Manchester, and Birmingham.
Conversely, the least deprived areas in England are found in St Albans, with one area in Harpenden Town recognized as the least deprived in the country. Subsequent areas in Harpenden and St Albans also feature among the least deprived regions in England.
