A man who unlawfully entered a residence in Rockford, Illinois, and attacked an 11-year-old girl by stabbing her while she was asleep, knelt down and asked for forgiveness during his sentencing for the disturbing incident. Ricardo Perez Castillo, a recruiter for the US Marine Corps, broke into a home on Ella Terrace Court on June 15, 2024. He armed himself with a knife after removing his clothing and proceeded to the upper floor where the children were sleeping.
Upon entering one of the girl’s rooms, Castillo climbed on top of her and carried out the stabbing, causing terror to the victim who described the experience as horrifying. Following his arrest, Castillo, who has now been convicted, appealed directly to the girl for forgiveness, stating that he had a spiritual awakening.
Castillo entered a plea of no contest to charges including assault with intent to murder, first-degree home invasion, and second-degree assault with intent to commit criminal sexual conduct, according to the Kent County Prosecutor’s office. The judge, Christina Mims, sentenced Castillo to 40 years in prison, likening the crime to a scene from a horror movie.
In a statement given to People Magazine, Elizabeth Bartlett, the chief assistant prosecutor of Kent County, revealed that Castillo mistakenly believed he was attacking the girl’s neck. Castillo reportedly admitted to authorities that he had intended to kill the girl by stabbing her in the neck and had planned to harm the entire family.
Regarding his disturbing actions, Castillo confessed that he had intended to engage in sexual acts with the girl after her death. The victim, in a court statement, recounted the pain and fear she experienced during the attack, expressing disbelief that a simple sleepover had led to such severe injuries.
After his sentencing, Castillo expressed remorse and sought forgiveness, acknowledging the pain and suffering he had caused. He claimed to have found solace in faith and apologized sincerely to the victims and the community for his heinous actions.
