Part of the M4 motorway was closed by authorities due to two separate accidents occurring within a short distance of each other, one involving a four-vehicle collision that resulted in a person being trapped. Emergency services responded to the initial incident on the M4 Westbound after receiving reports of the crash at 7:28 am. Firefighters used specialized equipment to extricate the trapped individual from their vehicle. Shortly after, another call came in about a four-vehicle crash just 200 meters away from the first collision. Responders already on the scene swiftly cleared the roadway utilizing Gojacks equipment, as confirmed by the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service.
The accidents caused significant traffic delays, with reports of delays lasting up to an hour and a half. Fortunately, the situation has since been resolved, and all lanes on the M4 have been reopened to traffic. According to AA traffic updates, delays of up to 94 minutes were observed on the M4 Westbound between J25A A4042 (Newport / Cwmbran) and J29 A48(M). Despite the clearance, ongoing work to clear a blocked lane is causing traffic to flow on only two lanes, with lane one still under maintenance. Initially, all three lanes were closed due to the accidents, leading to extensive queues from J28 A48 (Tredegar Park) to J30 A4232 Pentwyn Link Road (Cardiff Gate).
A representative from the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service provided details of the incidents, stating that they received a call at around 7:28 am reporting a road traffic collision on the M4 Westbound between Junction 28 Tredegar Park and Junction 29 Castleton. Fire crews from Duffryn, Roath, and Malpas stations were dispatched and successfully rescued the trapped person using hydraulic cutting tools. Subsequently, the area was cleared. Police and ambulance services were also present at the scene to assist.
Following the initial incident, a subsequent call was received regarding a four-car collision within close proximity to the first crash. The attending crews efficiently cleared the road using Gojacks equipment, with the incident resolved by 8:13 am. Stay tuned for live updates on this developing news story.
