Published on

Renowned as the voice of Calgary Flames radio broadcasts for over three decades, Peter Maher has passed away at the age of 79. His death was confirmed on Thursday. Maher started his tenure as the play-by-play announcer for the Flames’ radio broadcasts in 1980 and continued for 33 consecutive seasons until his retirement after the 2013-14 NHL season.

Throughout his illustrious career, which included the Flames’ Stanley Cup victory in 1989 and their journey to the finals in 2004, Maher was celebrated for his fervor and memorable catchphrases like “Yeah, baby!” and “You can put it in the win column!” His impact extended beyond the broadcast booth, making him an integral part of the Flames’ fan experience.

Born and raised in Campbellton, N.B., Maher initially called Toronto Maple Leafs games before transitioning to the Flames in 1980 when the team relocated to Calgary. He became synonymous with the Flames and was an essential figure in the team’s history.

Rob Kerr, who shared the press box with Maher for years, expressed his sadness at the news of Maher’s passing. Kerr highlighted Maher’s dedication and storytelling abilities, emphasizing his commitment to delivering authentic and journalistic broadcasts to Flames fans.

Maher’s broadcasting legacy extended beyond the Flames, as he also covered six NHL All-Star games, the 2005 IIHF World Championship, and the Canadian men’s hockey team’s games at the 2010 Winter Olympics, including Sidney Crosby’s iconic “Golden Goal” moment. In recognition of his outstanding contributions, Maher was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2006, receiving the Foster Hewitt Memorial Award for his exceptional work as an NHL broadcaster.

Following his retirement, Maher’s impact was further honored by naming the broadcast booth at the Scotiabank Saddledome after him. Additionally, an annual award bearing his name is presented to the Flames player who exemplifies virtues such as sincerity, integrity, dedication, and respect.
