Jack Willis, the standout performer for French champions Toulouse, was honored as the top player in the prestigious Top 14 league. Despite being overlooked by England due to their policy against selecting players based abroad, Willis has thrived since moving to France in 2022, winning three consecutive Top 14 titles with Toulouse following his departure from Wasps.
Initially joining Toulouse on a short-term deal, Willis committed his future to the club, effectively ending his chances of representing England. At 28 years old, with only 14 England caps to his credit, Willis claimed the top accolade in French rugby, beating out his peers Thomas Ramos and Sireli Maqala.
Expressing gratitude for the recognition, Willis noted the collective deserving candidates within his team, acknowledging the talent and dedication of his fellow players. Reflecting on his journey, he highlighted the pivotal opportunity Toulouse provided him, leading to his current success in the league.
During his time with Toulouse, Willis also secured a European Cup triumph, solidifying his impact on the team. His contract with the club extends until 2029, with an option allowing him to return to England in 2027, coinciding with the Rugby World Cup.
While England’s restrictive selection policy has limited their access to elite players, the national team’s head coach, Steve Borthwick, emphasized the importance of developing a strong domestic system to retain top talent. Borthwick stressed the need for England to create an environment where players are incentivized to stay and excel domestically, aligning with the team’s long-term goals.
