Sky offers a variety of TV streaming options, such as Glass TV and Stream box, catering to different preferences. These products provide access to premium channels and personalized recommendations, making them highly competitive. However, a new player is emerging that could challenge Sky’s dominance.
Freely, a service introduced last year, allows UK households to stream live TV for free on compatible new TVs without the need for an aerial. By connecting to the internet, users can access live channels through broadband effortlessly.
Previously, accessing this service required purchasing a new television. Fortunately, Freely has announced the launch of a new set-top box, created by Netgem, enabling any existing TV in UK homes to enjoy over 40 live channels without an aerial connection. This move directly pits Freely against Sky’s Stream box.
The upcoming Freely box will offer a range of features, including a comprehensive TV guide, a Mini Guide for current and upcoming programs, viewing recommendations, live TV pause function, and a seven-day backward and forward viewing capability. Additionally, regular updates will be provided to enhance features, channels, and content continuously.
Unlike Sky, Freely operates on a one-time purchase model, eliminating the need for subscription fees once the device is acquired. Jonathan Thompson, CEO of Everyone TV, emphasized the aim of making free TV accessible to all households through effortless streaming devices without the requirement for costly TV upgrades or subscriptions.
Sylvain Thevenot, Managing Director of Netgem U.K., highlighted the significance of the Freely streaming device in revolutionizing the TV viewing experience by offering seamless entertainment over Wi-Fi, catering to diverse households and revitalizing existing TVs affordably.
