Former world No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt has made an impressive comeback to the tennis scene after a hiatus of nearly six years. This time, he partnered with his 16-year-old son, Cruz, to secure a remarkable victory. The father-son duo dominated their opponents, Hayden Jones and Pavle Marinkov, with a swift 6-1, 6-0 win in just under an hour.
Securing a wildcard entry into the main draw of the NSW Open, a Challenger event in Sydney, Hewitt and his son showcased their prowess on the court. Despite facing four break points, the duo remained resilient and swiftly advanced to the quarter-finals.
Having last played a singles match in 2016 and retiring officially from doubles only in the 2020 Australian Open, Hewitt displayed no signs of rustiness in this recent match. The 44-year-old, donning his trademark backwards cap, appeared comfortable and in control on the Ken Rosewall Arena, sealing the victory with a decisive net winner.
Since stepping away from professional play, Hewitt has continued to stay engaged in the tennis world as the captain of Australia’s Davis Cup team. He is also actively supporting his son, Cruz, who is starting to make a name for himself in the tennis circuit.
Cruz, who has participated in junior Grand Slam tournaments, is now venturing into the Challenger circuit, showing promise and determination. Despite encountering some setbacks, like a loss in the men’s Australian Open qualifying rounds, Cruz has been steadily progressing at the Challenger level.
Recently, Cruz achieved his first Challenger level victory in Brisbane by defeating world No. 192 James McCabe before facing a tough three-set match against Wu Tung-lin. With a current career-high ranking of No. 759, Cruz is making steady strides in his tennis career.
The Hewitt duo is now set to compete against another all-Australian pair, Calum Puttergill and Dane Sweeny, in their upcoming doubles match, aiming to continue their winning streak on the court.
