Former Tłı̨chǫ Broadcaster Faces ALS Diagnosis

Published on

Mary Rose Blackduck, a former Tłı̨chǫ broadcaster, sought medical attention after experiencing balance issues and muscle weakness, leading to multiple falls. Despite visits to Yellowknife doctors, she remained undiagnosed and was only prescribed sleeping pills. Frustrated, Blackduck traveled to the University of Alberta Hospital at a personal cost of nearly $6,000, where she was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a debilitating nervous system disease with a life expectancy of two to five years post-diagnosis.

The Northwest Territories Health and Social Services Authority acknowledged the complexities of diagnosing ALS due to the lack of definitive tests and the variability of early symptoms. The territory lacks a full-time neurologist, making diagnosis challenging. Blackduck, now facing the harsh reality of ALS, is considering relocating to Edmonton for better support services, as the N.W.T. lacks a local ALS support group.

Despite the emotional turmoil, Blackduck is focusing on organizing her affairs and is grateful for the time she has to prepare for the challenges ahead. The N.W.T. health department remains non-committal on reimbursing her medical expenses, citing the need for a formal medical referral under the territory’s travel policy.
