The ex-leader of the Navy has raised concerns about the potential escalation of the Russia-Ukraine conflict into a nuclear standoff. Admiral Lord West, the former First Sea Lord, issued a stark warning, indicating that Britain is currently in a state of de facto conflict with Moscow.

He highlighted the concept of “grey zone warfare,” which involves aggressive actions outside conventional warfare, such as Russian interference with undersea cables and drone intrusions along Nato’s eastern borders. Lord West expressed uncertainty about finding a resolution to the conflict, emphasizing the undesirability of a full-scale war between Nato and Russia due to the potential risks involved, including the possibility of nuclear confrontation.

Former Nato General Secretary Lord Robertson, who led a comprehensive review of the nation’s defense capabilities, criticized Britain’s lack of readiness to counter existing threats. Previous warnings from experts have highlighted Russia’s increasing activities against the UK, including cyberattacks, aerial surveillance, arson attacks, and submarine infiltrations.

Sir Ken McCallum, the head of MI5, recently stated that Russia is actively seeking to sow chaos and destruction globally but is now relying on disposable proxies after its operatives were expelled from European embassies. Lord Robertson reiterated the nation’s vulnerability, noting the ongoing cyberattacks and organized sabotage across Europe attributed to the Russian military intelligence agency, GRU.

Putin’s ambitions extend beyond territorial expansion in eastern Ukraine, causing apprehension in neighboring nations like Moldova and Azerbaijan, according to Lord Robertson. He emphasized the importance of supporting President Zelenskyy and the Ukrainian government to dissuade Vladimir Putin from continuing his aggressive actions. Encouraging Putin to recognize that his current strategy is unsustainable is crucial, as his gains are minimal and do not result in significant territorial advancements.
