Former Chinese premier Zhu Rongji has passed away at the age of 97, as reported by state media. The official Xinhua news agency announced that Zhu succumbed to an illness in Beijing at approximately 11 a.m. on Wednesday. Known for his assertive and direct approach, Zhu played a pivotal role in kickstarting China’s rapid economic growth by implementing significant reforms in the 1990s and steering the country towards joining the World Trade Organization.
Despite facing adversity early in his career, including being exiled to rural areas for advocating reforms similar to those in other communist nations, Zhu spearheaded a series of transformative initiatives during his tenure as premier from 1998 to 2003. His reform agenda aimed at enhancing the efficiency and profitability of state-owned enterprises, resulting in millions of job cuts but propelling China to become the world’s second-largest economy after the United States in 2010.
Building upon Deng Xiaoping’s reform policies from 1979, Zhu was instrumental in steering China towards significant milestones such as its accession to the WTO, a move that significantly boosted the nation’s global trade presence.
