Voters are casting their ballots today in three federal byelections taking place in North Vancouver-Capilano, Beaches-East York, and Chicoutimi-Le Fjord. The Liberal Party currently holds 170 seats in the House of Commons, while opposition parties collectively have 166 seats. To maintain control of the legislative agenda, the Liberals need to secure victories in two of the byelections.
The most closely contested race is anticipated in Chicoutimi-Le Fjord, where the former Conservative MP Richard Martel resigned last month after being appointed to the Senate. The Liberals and Bloc Québécois are vying for the seat, with polls indicating a close race between the two parties. Daniel Gobeil is the Liberal candidate, while Caroline Dubé is representing the Bloc.
In the Beaches-East York riding in Toronto, candidates are competing to succeed former Liberal MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith, who won the seat by a significant margin in the 2025 federal election. The candidates in this riding include Tanveer Shahnawaz for the Liberals, Jim Syrbos for the Conservatives, Shannon Devine for the NDP, and Bruce Livesey for the Green Party.
Meanwhile, in North Vancouver-Capilano, candidates are vying to fill the seat left vacant by former Liberal MP Jonathan Wilkinson, who resigned after being appointed as Canada’s ambassador to the European Union. The candidates in this riding are Braeden Caley for the Liberals, Stephen Curran for the Conservatives, Stephen Tweedale for the NDP, and Shelley Luce for the Green Party.
CBC News will provide special coverage of the byelections, with chief political correspondent Rosemary Barton and Power & Politics host David Cochrane starting at 9:30 p.m. ET. Losing all three byelections would not spell the end for the Liberals, as they would have more opportunities in the future to secure the two wins necessary for a majority.
Additionally, the prime minister has yet to call byelections in the Quebec ridings of Saint-Hyacinthe-Bagot-Acton, Rosemont-La Petite-Patrie, and Laurier-Sainte-Marie, as well as in the Ontario riding of Scarborough North. Conservative MP Cathay Wagantall is set to resign from her seat in the Saskatchewan riding of Yorkton-Melville, while Conservative MP Larry Brock plans to step down from his seat in the Ontario riding of Brantford-Brant South-Six Nations next month.
