The Federal Court has mandated the disclosure of previously hidden sections from a significant September 1986 study commissioned for an inquiry on wartime atrocities. Federal Court Justice Simon Fothergill, in a recent public ruling, has directed the government to reveal redacted segments of the report focusing on the integration of suspected Nazi war criminals into post-Second World War Canada.
Advocacy group B’nai Brith Canada has persistently pushed for increased transparency regarding the findings of researcher Alti Rodal’s report. Earlier in February 2024, Library and Archives Canada partially unveiled more details from the study following a request for information from B’nai Brith. However, certain sections, particularly those delving into the involvement of American intelligence agencies in aiding Nazi collaborators’ settlement in Canada, were still withheld by Library and Archives.
In a decisive stance, Fothergill dismissed the government’s argument that disclosing additional details could adversely impact Canada’s diplomatic relations.
