A father, injured in an incident where his wife lost her life, carried her coffin at the funeral while their son faced murder charges. Stella Gallagher, 59, and Brian Gallagher, 63, were taken to Cork University Hospital due to stab wounds on November 17. Sadly, Stella, a chemical engineer at Eli Lilly in Cork, Ireland, passed away.
Brian, who also suffered severe injuries, underwent emergency neck surgery. Following his discharge, he attended Stella’s funeral at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Ballinlough. Brian was part of the group carrying Stella’s coffin, and she was laid to rest at St Michael’s Cemetery in Blackrock.
Their son, David Gallagher, was charged with his mother’s murder at their home and with harming his father. During the funeral, Brian’s brother, Alan, praised Stella’s generosity and selflessness, mentioning her love for baking and gardening. He expressed gratitude for having known her and highlighted her passion for life’s simple joys.
Authorities reported that David Gallagher was arrested, charged, and cautioned by Dt Sgt Niall Hayes of Blackrock Garda Station. Gardai planned to request his remand in custody at Cork District Court on November 26, as bail is not typically granted for murder charges at that level.
Legal aid was secured for Gallagher, who is unemployed, and medical attention was ensured while in custody. A request for urgent medical and psychiatric evaluation at Cork Prison was approved by Judge John King, who remanded Gallagher for a video-linked appearance at Cork District Court.
