A member of the Dutch Parliament has voiced support for including darts in the Olympic Games, with prominent figures in the sport showing excitement. Jimme Nordkamp, a 29-year-old MP from the municipality of Losser in Eastern Netherlands and a member of the Labour Party, is a passionate darts player advocating for the sport’s recognition on the global stage.

Nordkamp highlighted the growing popularity of darts, especially after the emergence of players like Luke Littler, emphasizing that it deserves to be taken more seriously and considered for Olympic status. He stated that darts has evolved into a top-level competition with a massive international following, calling for its inclusion in the Olympics.

Renowned Dutch darts player Michael van Gerwen expressed openness to the idea of darts being part of the Olympics, acknowledging that many sports in the Games are less global and professional than darts. However, he noted that the decision lies with the Olympic Committee, Matchroom Sport, and the PDC.

Luke Humphries, the world’s number two player, supported the notion of darts in the Olympics, albeit expressing skepticism about its immediate realization due to insufficient momentum around the idea. He highlighted the dominance of British players like Littler and Humphries in major darts events, indicating their potential for Olympic success.

Despite the enthusiasm for darts’ inclusion, a major challenge lies in its organizational structure. The International Olympic Committee requires sports to be overseen by a single global governing body, a criterion not currently met by the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) despite being a leading authority in the sport.

The Olympics has shown openness to new sports in recent years, with additions like golf and rugby 7s. The upcoming 2028 Games in Los Angeles will introduce American Flag Football and Squash as new sports, reflecting the evolving landscape of Olympic events.
