“Death Row Inmate’s Life-Saving Sentence Ends Tragically”

Published on

A prisoner on death row, Tremane Wood, who had his execution commuted to life without parole at the last minute, was found unresponsive in his cell shortly after. Wood, 46, had a medical emergency attributed to dehydration and stress following the news of his sentence being changed. Officials confirmed that he collapsed during a routine check but was reported to be stable and alert after receiving treatment.

Wood, who was convicted of fatally stabbing Ronnie Wipf in 2002, insisted that his brother was the actual perpetrator and had maintained his innocence. Governor Kevin Stitt intervened to change Wood’s sentence, ensuring he remains incarcerated for life without the possibility of commutation, parole, or pardon. The decision was influenced by the victim’s family supporting clemency. Wood expressed gratitude towards the governor for sparing his life.

Despite concerns raised by some, including State Attorney General Gentner Drummond, about granting clemency to a convicted murderer, Wood’s legal team and supporters welcomed the decision. Wood’s attorney, Amanda Bass Castro Alves, expressed gratitude, stating that the outcome respected the wishes of the victims’ families and hoped for their peace.

The case had sparked debate, with conflicting accounts of the crime and Wood’s behavior in prison. Wood denied involvement in the murder but admitted to misconduct behind bars. The State’s Pardon and Parole Board narrowly recommended mercy for Wood, prompting varied reactions from lawmakers and legal experts.

Wood’s medical emergency coincided with another high-profile execution in South Carolina, where mass killer Stephen Bryant was put to death by firing squad. Bryant’s attempt to attribute his actions to brain damage caused by fetal alcohol exposure was not accepted by the court, leading to his execution.
