“Deadly Fire Engulfs Hong Kong Apartment Blocks”

Published on

Shocking images of Hong Kong apartment blocks engulfed in thick smoke have emerged following a major fire that swept through multiple buildings in the Chinese-administered territory around 2:51 pm local time.

The fire erupted at Wang Fuk Court, a large public housing complex comprising eight residential blocks with close to 2,000 units in Tai Po, situated near the border with mainland China. Tai Po, an established suburban area of Hong Kong, has a population of approximately 300,000 residents.

Tragically, the fire has resulted in the deaths of at least thirteen individuals, including one firefighter who responded to the scene. Authorities have confirmed that three other individuals are in critical condition due to the blaze. Temporary shelters have been set up by Hong Kong officials for residents affected by the fire at the Wang Fuk Court complex.

The devastating fire occurred at Wang Fuk Court, a residential complex with 2,000 units spread across eight blocks, several of which were engulfed in flames. The complex accommodates around 4,600 residents and has been part of the government’s subsidized home ownership program since 1983.

The cause of the fire remains unknown at this time. Many of the affected buildings were covered in bamboo scaffolding secured with nylon fasteners, a common sight in Hong Kong.

The severity of the fire prompted the Hong Kong government to raise the alert level to level 5, the highest level. Police have evacuated neighboring estates and the Transport Department has closed several roads, including a section of Tai Po Road, a key highway in Hong Kong.

Over 700 firefighters, along with 128 fire engines, 57 ambulances, and 400 police officers, have been deployed to combat the blaze. Residents like 68-year-old Y.Y. Chan expressed shock and concern, stating that although the fire in his block had been extinguished, the situation was unsettling. Another resident, 66-year-old Harry Cheung, recounted hearing a loud noise before witnessing a nearby building catch fire, prompting him to pack his belongings.

The community is left reeling from the tragic event, with many uncertain about their immediate living arrangements.
