A man, identified as Kyle Hayes Condon, 25, residing in Pairc an Tobair in Clonakilty, Co Cork, has been sentenced to jail for raping a 17-year-old student. The incident took place in a secluded grassy area in West Cork, lasting about twenty minutes. Condon appeared in the Central Criminal Court in Cork today, where he pleaded guilty to charges of rape, sexual assault, assault causing harm, and false imprisonment.
The court heard that the young woman, after receiving a lift home from a party, was walking the final stretch when Condon began following and engaging her in conversation. The victim, recording a Snapchat message, captured Condon’s voice during the encounter.
Reports indicate that Condon, under the influence of a significant amount of cocaine that night, offered drugs to the teenager before forcefully taking her to a grassy area. Despite her pleas, he proceeded to rape her, causing the victim to fear for her life.
After the ordeal, Condon allowed the girl to leave, and upon returning home, she disclosed the incident to her parents. Following a medical examination at a Sexual Assault Treatment Unit and reporting the incident to the authorities, Condon was arrested.
In a heartrending victim impact statement, the young girl expressed her struggles and trauma following the assault, detailing the physical and emotional toll it took on her. She emphasized the impact of feeling unsafe and vulnerable in her own surroundings post-incident.
The victim encouraged others in similar situations to speak out and seek support, highlighting that they are not alone. Condon’s defense acknowledged his deep remorse for his actions that night and his cooperation with authorities.
The sentencing judge praised the victim for her quick thinking in recording Condon’s voice and actions, ultimately leading to his conviction. Condon admitted to his crimes and expressed genuine remorse, leading to an early guilty plea. The judge recognized mitigating factors but still deemed the offense serious, resulting in a seven-year prison sentence with the final year suspended.
Additionally, Condon was ordered to have no contact with the victim for 40 years post-release, with the directive interpreted as indefinite.
