A man, aged 25, from Cork faces charges for allegedly murdering his mother and assaulting his father. David Gallagher, residing in Shrewsbury Downs, Ballinlough, appeared in Cork District Court today after an incident involving a stabbing on Monday night at the family residence. Authorities responded to a call at Shrewsbury Downs around 9 pm on Monday.

The accused, Gallagher, was formally accused of the murder of his mother, Stella Gallagher, aged 59, and of causing harm to his father, Brian Gallagher, aged 63, at the same location on the same evening. Stella Gallagher was taken to Cork University Hospital on Monday night, where she was pronounced dead. She had a background as a chemical engineer at Eli Lilly in Cork.

During the court proceedings, Detective Sergeant Niall Hayes from Blackrock Garda Station testified about the arrest, charges, and cautioning of Gallagher. The defendant remained silent when the charges were presented to him earlier today. Gallagher had been held for questioning at Bridewell Garda Station.

Sergeant John Kelleher mentioned that the police would request custody remand at Cork District Court on November 26, as bail is typically not granted at the district court level for murder charges. Defense solicitor Shane Collins Daly successfully applied for free legal representation for Gallagher, who is currently unemployed, which was approved by Judge John King. Mr. Collins Daly also requested urgent medical and psychiatric assessments for Gallagher upon his arrival at Cork Prison, which the judge authorized.

The judge ordered that the defendant receive necessary medical attention while in custody and remanded Gallagher to remain in custody until his next court appearance via video link at Cork District Court on November 26.
