Australian researchers have developed a groundbreaking tool to assess the environmental impact of fossil fuel projects on the climate. They have introduced the Carbon Impacts Tracer, which can predict the effects of proposed mines, offshore oil platforms, and other energy initiatives on global warming, glacier melting, and human mortality rates. This innovative online tool, unveiled in a virtual news conference by Sarah Perkins-Kirkpatrick, a climate science professor at the Australian National University, utilizes carbon dioxide emission data from project submissions to estimate the projects’ contribution to global temperature increases.

The Carbon Impacts Tracer has been launched with case studies on various projects, including the Bay du Nord offshore oil project in Canada, led by Equinor. This project is expected to extract over 430 million barrels of oil reserves, potentially emitting 188 megatonnes of CO2 over 20 years, resulting in a minute temperature rise globally. The tool also projects adverse effects such as increased heat exposure for over 111,000 individuals, 25 additional heat-related deaths in Europe, 4.6 square kilometers of glacier loss, and the loss of approximately 2,100 jobs due to pollution, plunging about 9,800 people into extreme poverty.

While Equinor has not yet responded to requests for comments, Joel Finnis, a climatologist at Memorial University, highlighted the tool’s significance in consolidating research findings for public understanding. Maria Nawaz from the University of New South Wales emphasized the tool’s potential in holding governments and corporations accountable for their emissions, challenging the notion that individual projects have minimal impact on the environment.

Nawaz envisions the tool being utilized by governments, regulators, and the public to evaluate proposed projects effectively. Insurers and economists could leverage this tool to assess risks and project economic implications of such initiatives. The Carbon Impacts Tracer focuses on forecasting the impacts of upcoming projects, with plans to incorporate additional developments as data becomes available, thereby enhancing environmental awareness and accountability.
