Summer McIntosh, a Canadian swimming sensation, has set her sights on a remarkable goal after achieving multiple gold medals at prestigious events. Following her success at the 2024 Olympic Games and last year’s world championships, she aims to replicate Michael Phelps’ historic feat of winning five solo gold medals at the upcoming 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.
During a recent trip to southern California, McIntosh was inspired when she saw SoFi Stadium, the venue that will host the swimming events at the 2028 Olympics. The 19-year-old from Toronto described the experience as unforgettable and is determined to make her mark at the upcoming Games.
This week, McIntosh is competing at the Pan Pacific championships in Irvine, California. The Pan Pacs, held every four years, are a major event featuring top swimming nations like Australia, the United States, Japan, Brazil, South Africa, China, and Canada.
The competition kicked off with open-water events in Long Beach and will continue with pool events in Irvine, where McIntosh will lead a team of 42 Canadian swimmers. Notable athletes in the Canadian squad include Taylor Ruck, Sophie Angus, Oliver Dawson, Lorne Wingginton, and others who have excelled in recent competitions.
McIntosh, coached by Bob Bowman, is scheduled to compete in four events at the Pan Pacs, showcasing her versatility and skill in different disciplines. Her decision to focus on specific events aligns with her strategic training approach and Olympic aspirations.
The Pan Pacs also feature international stars like Katie Ledecky, Lanni Pallister, Bobby Finke, Kate Douglass, and others, setting the stage for thrilling matchups and world-class performances. Swimming enthusiasts can watch the action live on the CBC Gem streaming app and CBC Sports website.
