Calgary Wild Stun League Leaders Ottawa Rapid

Serita Thurton netted two goals in the first half as the Calgary Wild, sitting at the bottom of the standings, caused an upset by defeating the Ottawa Rapid, who lead the league, with a scoreline of 4-3 in Northern Super League action held at McMahon Stadium on Saturday.

Kahli Johnson opened the scoring for the home team in the 15th minute to give them a 1-0 advantage, followed by Thurton doubling the lead about 13 minutes later to make it 2-0.

Ottawa’s Jung Min-Young found the net in the 38th minute, and Melanie Forbes leveled the score at 2-2 just one minute into stoppage time in the first half.

Thurton struck again just before halftime to secure her brace, propelling the Wild into the lead for the remainder of the game.

Jorian Baucom also contributed a goal for the Wild, who now hold a record of two wins, 12 losses, and two draws.

Jyllissa Harris converted a penalty in the 86th minute for the Rapid, who now stand at 10 wins, three losses, and three draws. This defeat also ended Ottawa’s 10-match unbeaten streak.

Despite the Rapid controlling 54% of possession, they were outshot by the Wild 16-13 (with 9 shots on target compared to Ottawa’s 6).

The Wild earned six of the 11 corner kicks during the game, while Ottawa received one yellow card and one red card.

In another match, Jessica De Filippo scored twice for the Vancouver Rise, including a goal in the 57th minute to level the score and a second goal in the fifth minute of stoppage time to secure a 2-1 victory over the Halifax Tides at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby, B.C.

Jordyn Rhodes had given the fourth-placed Tides a 1-0 lead with a goal in the 19th minute.

The Rise controlled 56% of possession and outshot the Tides 18-13, with 6 shots on target compared to Halifax’s 4.

Halifax took four of the six corner kicks in the game, while the Rise received two of the three yellow cards issued during the match.
