A tragic incident in Patagonia, Chile, claimed the life of a British woman, Victoria Bond, during a severe snowstorm. Ms. Bond, a long-time employee at Visit Isles of Scilly, was on a once-in-a-lifetime hiking adventure with friends in Argentina and Chile when the deadly snowstorm struck. Sadly, she was among five individuals who lost their lives, including two German and two Mexican nationals. Despite a widespread search and rescue operation by Chilean authorities, only four survivors were found.
Ms. Bond’s employers expressed deep sorrow over her passing, highlighting her dedication and vibrant personality. Andrew Sells, Chair of Visit Isles of Scilly, praised her exceptional work ethic and described her as a joy to work with. Euan Rodger, the Executive Vice Chair, emphasized the team’s devastation at the loss of Ms. Bond and acknowledged her remarkable spirit that will be dearly missed.
Efforts are now focused on repatriating the victims’ bodies, with support from the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office for Ms. Bond’s family. President Gabriel Boric Font of Chile extended heartfelt condolences to the families affected by the accident, vowing complete cooperation and assistance from Chilean authorities in the aftermath of this tragedy.
