Tributes are being paid to a beloved teenager who tragically passed away just one day after receiving a diagnosis of leukemia, having previously been dismissed as experiencing ‘growing pains’.
Harley Andrews, aged 16, had visited his GP a few weeks earlier, mentioning feeling under the weather. Despite this, both Harley and his mother, Gemma, were told it was likely just a virus or growing pains by a family friend.
The young athlete, who enjoyed playing football and rugby and hailed from Leigh in Greater Manchester, showed no further symptoms until the weekend when he observed blood in his urine. Concerned, his father and stepmother took him to Royal Bolton Hospital on Saturday, where he was informed of having an aggressive form of blood cancer. Tragically, he passed away early the next day.
Medical tests revealed that Harley had stage four leukemia, resulting in internal bleeding in his brain and other organs. He succumbed to the illness shortly after learning about his condition.
A close family friend, Kaylee Jackson, initiated a fundraising campaign to assist with expenses, which has raised over £8,000 to date. The campaign describes Harley as a bright, kind, and loving individual who left a significant impact on those around him.
In an effort to alleviate the financial burden on Harley’s family during this difficult time, the fundraiser aims to support them with funeral costs, time off work, and any additional expenses they may encounter.
Expressing gratitude on behalf of the family, Gemma acknowledged the outpouring of support and generosity, finding solace in the love and memories shared about Harley.
Kaylee, who knew Harley from childhood and was his former teaching assistant, recalled him as a well-liked and polite young boy who cherished time with his large family and friends.
Harley, a dedicated player in local amateur football, was described as a key figure in the success of his team, Astley and Tyldesley FC, in winning both league and cup titles.
Another fundraising page, gathering nearly £2,500, also pays tribute to Harley’s warm personality and love for football, highlighting the joy the sport brought him and those around him.
The community support and donations have been overwhelming for the family, providing relief from financial worries during this challenging period.
Various sports clubs, including Astley & Tyldesley FC and Leigh East rugby League team, expressed their grief over the loss of Harley, emphasizing his impact on the sporting community and his teammates.
