Baseball Star Dylan Cease’s Art Triumph at AGO

Published on

Dylan Cease, known for his theatre background in high school rather than art, has unexpectedly found success in the art world, with his artwork now showcased at the Art Gallery of Ontario. The AGO shop unveiled a special retail collection featuring Cease’s painting inspired by Toronto, displayed in Walker Court. The collection includes various items like prints, postcards, T-shirts, sweatshirts, and totes, with proceeds supporting the AGO’s charitable efforts.

Reflecting on his journey into art, Cease humorously mentioned his lack of formal art education in high school. Despite this, he acknowledged that his teachers might have had plenty of critiques about his work. During a recent event at the AGO, Cease engaged with children from summer camps who listened as he shared his thoughts on art.

The art exhibition drew a crowd of Blue Jays fans, both young and old, forming a line that extended for blocks. Cease expressed his astonishment at the overwhelming response, stating that the experience felt larger than he had anticipated. He admitted that he never imagined himself being involved in such artistic endeavors.

Cease’s venture into painting began in 2022, with his artwork also supporting a charity linked to former teammate Michael King. Notably, the Toronto-themed piece now adorns the office of Blue Jays manager John Schneider. Despite suggestions from teammates to paint himself pitching, Cease opts for abstract art due to his perceived limitations in drawing skills.

Inspired by the prospect of spending a significant portion of his career in Toronto, Cease, who recently signed a lucrative contract with the Blue Jays, expressed his interest in immersing himself in Canadian culture. He mentioned his plans to explore oil painting in the future, emphasizing the joy and balance that art brings to his life, contrasting the intensity of baseball with the more forgiving nature of painting.

Cease’s positive outlook on art as a form of personal fulfillment and relaxation was evident in his statement about the therapeutic nature of painting. Regardless of where his art ends up, Cease finds joy and contentment in the creative process, emphasizing the importance of balance in his life.
