Joey Mawson, a 29-year-old Australian racer, has been identified as the individual accused of sexually assaulting a nurse while she was at Michael Schumacher’s residence in Gland, Switzerland. The alleged incidents occurred after a social gathering at Schumacher’s mansion.
Mawson has refuted the accusations, asserting that his relationship with the nurse was consensual and close. He mentioned a previous encounter at a nightclub in Geneva where they shared a kiss.
Originally from Sydney, Australia, Mawson was once considered a promising Formula 1 talent before opting to resume racing in his home country due to a decline in performance. He had a friendship with Mick Schumacher and competed against notable figures in the sport like Lando Norris and George Russell.
Although a trial was scheduled, Mawson, a two-time Australian S5000 champion who is currently disqualified from racing due to a doping controversy, failed to attend the court proceedings on the designated day. The trial was officially initiated but postponed to a later unspecified date.
There is no involvement of the Schumacher family in the legal proceedings. The prosecution’s indictment accuses Mawson of assaulting the nurse while she was unconscious after consuming vodka cocktails following her caregiving duties for Schumacher, who requires constant attention due to a past skiing accident.
According to court documents, the incident allegedly occurred on November 23, 2019, when Mawson was at Schumacher’s residence playing pool with other staff members. The nurse, after finishing her shift, joined them and later retired to bed, where Mawson is accused of assaulting her. The nurse reported the incident over two years later in January 2022.
